Cleanup of Hann Bay (Dakar) in Senegal

Overview

This flagship project focuses on the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and the pre-treatment of waste from the most polluting industries along the Hann Bay in Dakar (Senegal).

The general objective (impact) of this action, phases 1 and 2 combined, is to achieve a lasting improvement in the ecological status of Hann Bay and the living conditions of the local population in terms of the environment, health, economic, and social aspects while helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The specific objective (effect) of this action is to develop people's access to a modern and economically sustainable sanitation service and, in doing so, to reduce the proportion of untreated wastewater discharged into the environment.

The outputs of this action contributing to the corresponding specific objectives are as follows:

  1. Industrial, domestic and parasitic wastewater is collected, transported, treated by primary and secondary treatment and recovered or discharged into the sea by marine currents in accordance with the discharge standards.
  2. The most polluting industries pre-treat their wastewater.
  3. The implementation of the polluter-pays principle helps to cover the costs of operating and maintening the wastewater treatment facilities.
